Healthy Homes and your bathroom
Since 1 July 2025 all private rentals must meet the Healthy Homes Standards, and the part that touches the bathroom is ventilation. Bathrooms need an extractor fan that vents to the outside, with the standard referencing a minimum around 25 litres per second at the time of writing. Venting into the roof space does not comply.
It matters because non-compliance carries real penalties, and because renovating can affect your existing compliance status. When we renovate a rental bathroom we make sure the extraction is done properly and vented outside as part of the job. Always confirm the current standard, as the rules are updated over time.
