A safe, easy-to-use bathroom can be the difference between staying in your own home and not. We build accessible bathrooms across the Waikato: level-entry showers, grab rails, comfort-height toilets and layouts that work with a walker or a wheelchair. We can also help you understand the funding that may be available.
What makes a bathroom genuinely accessible
Accessible is not one grab rail bolted to a wall. It is the whole room working together for the person using it, which is why the layout matters as much as the fittings.
- Level-entry (curbless) showers you can walk or wheel straight into
- Grab rails set at the right heights and fixed into proper backing, not just plasterboard
- Comfort-height toilets that are easier to sit down onto and stand up from
- Slip-resistant flooring and clear turning space for a walker or wheelchair
- Lever tapware, a handheld shower, and a fold-down or fixed seat where it helps
Funding: ACC, Enable and more
Accessible bathroom modifications are often funded, in part or in full, which makes this very different from a standard renovation. Depending on your situation, support may be available through ACC Housing Modifications, Enable New Zealand, some councils, and other schemes.
Funded work usually starts with an assessment, often by an occupational therapist, who specifies what is needed. We are happy to work from an OT's recommendations and quote to them. We are not the funder and cannot promise what you will be granted, but we can build to what is approved and explain the process in plain terms.
Ageing in place, and planning ahead
Plenty of our accessible work is not driven by an injury at all. It is people who intend to stay in the home they love and want a bathroom that will still suit them in ten or twenty years. Done well, an accessible bathroom looks like a good modern bathroom, not a hospital.
