The six stages of every bathroom we do
Strip out
Everything comes out to the framing. This is the point where an old bathroom tells you the truth about itself: rot under the tray, corroded copper, framing that was never quite plumb, and waterproofing that was a coat of paint.
Services
Plumbing and electrical roughed in to the new layout. Waste falls set properly, because a shower that drains slowly is almost always a fall that was rushed here.
Linings and waterproofing
Wet area sheeting, then a full waterproofing system to Building Code clause E3, taken up the walls and over the hob to the heights the system requires. Photographed and documented before anything covers it.
Tiling
Set out planned so cuts land where they are least visible, not wherever the first full tile happens to finish. Grout and silicone lines that follow a straight line across the whole room.
Fitout
Vanity, toilet, tapware, shower glass, heated towel rail, extractor. The stage that looks fastest and is the easiest to leave two millimetres out of level.
Sign off
Inspections where the job needs them, a walk through with you, a snag list actioned rather than argued about, and the room cleaned before we hand it back.
The standard
What we will not do
- Paint on waterproofing and call it a membrane system.
- Start tiling before the waterproofing has cured to the manufacturer's spec.
- Set out tiles from one corner and leave a sliver cut on the wall you look at from the door.
- Silicone over a gap that should have been sheeted properly.
- Leave the extractor venting into the ceiling cavity instead of outside.
- Hand back a room with the snag list still on it.
